Benefits and Services for Older Workers
With the elimination of mandatory retirement and be it by choice or necessity, many persons are opting to continue working past the age of 65. According to the WSIB, "There is no impact to the provision of or entitlement to WSIB benefits or services to workers as a result of the elimination of the mandatory retirement age". If you are injured on the job after the age of 65 and lose time from work you may be paid for up to 2 years after the injury. For example, if a worker is injured at age 70 he/she may be paid up to 72 years of age.
The current Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997 requires that the employer and worker co-operate in the early and safe return to work of the worker. It also stipulates that an employer's obligation to re-employ ends on the date when the worker reaches age 65.
Full details will be available shortly under the Benefits section, 'WSIB and working past 65' on our website.
